520 _a India is primarily an agricultural country producing different types of cereals, millets and pulses. These cereals, millets and pulses are being harvested at different seasons in different regions. Drying of these crops is an important feature and plays a vital role in its keeping quality and nutrition. Different methods of drying systems adopted in India are discussed in this paper. Its capacity, effectiveness and cost of drying are optimised. Annarnalai University has developed the following types of solar dryers for drying paddy: roof cum solar crop dryer, low cost plastic suction type solar dryer, auxiliary heated solar dryer for drying agricultural produce. The construction details of these dryers are explained. The performance of these dryers, including their capacity, drying time, effectiveness, cost and efficiency are discussed.
