Images of tourism: an historical perspective - May 1981 - 33 p. tbls.

Jamaicans are highly aware of their dependence on foreign markets and it is not by accident that a song of reggae star Peter Tosh states "The day the dollar dies things gonna ge easier." This paper explores one of the more visible manifestations of overseas influence: Tourism. The development of tourism on Barbados and Jamaica is reviewed and current attitudes towards tourists are analysed in relation to historical circumstances. The different models of tourism are compared and evaluated against social factors.
