Describes the origins and development of education in the Caribbean from the early eighteenth century to the nineteen seventies. Bequests establishing trust or foundations for the basis of the systems of secondary education established in the Caribbean during the second half of the nineteenth century. The development of education is traced from the efforts of missionaries to provide schooling for slaves to the medical approaches to education adopted by Cuba in the late 50's and its possible application in other Caribbean countries.
