Summary, etc. A reconnaissance mineral survey of Dominica, principally to examine the possible occurrence of bauxite deposits, was carried out in October-November, 1965. Thirty samples of clay alteration products of diverse igneous and pyroclastic rocks were collected from road sections throughout the island, special attention being given to cuttings opened up by current road construction. The alumina content of all samples was too low for commercial bauxite. Though conditions favourable to bauxite formation are present, the geological young age of the rocks and the vigorous erosion to which they have been subjected since formation, militates against any large deposits having had either the time to form or to survive. Minerals concentrates were found in many of the island's rivers. Many of those occur in the oldest volcanic rocks which occupy the sector of the east coast from Rosalie to Marigot. The Saint Sauveur and Madjini Akayuma rivers, whose concentrates contain copper and lead minerals, are also located within this east coast region. Large punicious agglomerate deposits in addition to those known in the Roseau and Layou valleys, are present in the Ma Robert area, near Rosalie, and in Grand Savanne. The low levels of activity recorded by 1413A scintillometer equipment on radiometric traverses throughout the island indicate that the existence of near surface radioactive mineral deposits is unlikely.
