Examines the economic implications of political union of Windward Islands members of the OECS. Provides a general background of the issues and highlights prospects for the development of the Union of East Caribbean States. The paper looks at the economic performance of the Windward Islands for 1980-1989 noting fairly high growth rates and levels of per capita income which place the island within the category of middle income countries. Economic gains from unification include an increase in the resource base, reduction in insular competition, improvements to transportation and distribution systems and greater efficiencies in government due to economies of scale. |
